Why this story is important
Rites of passage are those key life transitions — birth, coming of age, graduation, marriage, parenthood, loss, vocation shift, aging. They represent crossing a threshold from one life-phase to another. Writing the story helps you honor that transformation and make sense of “before and after.”
When you record how you moved through that transition — the doubts, rituals, challenges — you strengthen your sense of who you are now because you see the path you traversed. You give voice to how you were changed, not just what changed. Rites of passage often have cultural or familial rituals tied to them. Writing your experience allows you to situate your journey within your community’s traditions (or lack thereof), bridging your personal life with collective meaning. A rite of passage is more than “what happened” — it’s about why it mattered, how it changed you, what you carried forward. Writing the story helps you live into that meaning, rather than just skim the surface.
